June is the sixth month of the year (can you believe the year is half over!?) and it takes its name from the Roman goddess Junno. Junno is the goddess of marriage, and for this reason, June has always been looked upon as the best month in which to marry.
The Anglo-Saxons on the other hand, named this month "Sera monath" which means "dry month." Very practical, and very not a Northwest summer..
June is the month for Flag Day's. On June 14th, the United States celebrates Flag Day on June 14th (otherwise known as Melanie Faulkner's birthday). It commemorates the day in 1777 when the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as our flag; at that time, it only had 13 stars and 13 strips.
In Sweden, flag day is celebrated on June 6th and in Finland it is celebrated on the Saturday closest to June 24th.
The beginning of summer (in the Northern hemisphere) is June 20th - the summer solstice. We will officially begin to see good weather beginning that day. :)
June 21st is the longest day of the year. In Seattle, we will enjoy more than 16 hours of daylight.
For all you tennis fans, June is the the month of Wimbeldon tennis tournament in England.
The flower for June is the rose, and the gem is the pearl.
